Brit’s favourite toast toppings have been revealed in a new survey by Waitrose.

Two thousand participants from across the UK nominated their favourite spreads for the study, produced in the lead-up to National Toast Day (22 February).

Butter came out as the top topping on toast with 28% of the vote, while marmalade was the second-favourite toast topper at 15%.

However, the study revealed a significant age divide on certain toast spreads as 47% of over-55s opted for marmalade as their favourite topping, while Nutella & chocolate spreads were favoured among millennials (32%).

Consumers in the east Midlands were most likely to have toast for lunch (33%), while in the West Midlands almost a quarter ate toast up to six times a week.

Overall, 70% of participants said they loved toast with its crust, while this rose to 77% for Welsh consumers surveyed.

“With toppings and toast for every taste and occasion, this ever-popular food – much-loved by us Brits – is the perfect quick snack,” said Waitrose buyer Tim Shaw. “Despite all the toppings, simple pleasures require simple things and butter still rules the roost when it comes to the nation’s favourite toast topping.”

The top five spreads are as follows:

  1. Butter
  2. Marmalade
  3. Jam
  4. Marmite
  5. Eggs
