Free-from brand B-Tempted has unveiled a selection of gluten-free vegan cupcakes and muffins.

The collection of four frosted cupcakes and three muffins was aimed at free-from consumers “tired of sacrificing flavour for their diet”, the gluten-free bakery said.

Available now in Whole Foods Market, the light sponge cupcakes are topped with a sweet frosting and sprinkles and sold in banana, vanilla & cinnamon, chocolate & strawberry, chocolate & hazelnut, and chocolate variants.

The banana, banana & raspberry and chocolate flavoured muffins are being sold as single or twin-packs on the B-Tempted website and are expected to launch into a multiple retailer later this year, the brand said.

Last year, B-Tempted founder Sarah Hilleary appeared on TV show Dragons’ Den and secured a £75,000 investment from entrepreneur Tej Lalvani.

She said sales expectations for the vegan range had tripled following a successful retail trial based on stockist feedback.

“I first started B-Tempted when I struggled to find really tasty gluten-free cakes,” Hilleary explained.

“I refused to believe it wasn’t possible to combine delicious flavours and textures with gluten-free ingredients. We have seen a huge surge in the number of people identifying as vegan over the past few years, so it was a natural progression for us to extend our product development to cater for the vegan market too.

“We’ve been thrilled with the feedback we’ve had from people so far. It is very rewarding to hear comments such as ‘the vegan frosting is incredible’, ‘the cakes are so light and fresh’ and ‘such delicate and balanced flavours’.”

Last week Café Forty One, a vegan patisserie, opened inside La Suite West Hotel near Hyde Park while vegan cake shop Rawnchy Desserts recently made its debut in Maryhill Road, Glasgow.
