A 120 year-old family-run bakery in Surrey has ceased trading.
Sutton’s Bakery in Chobham, which opened in 1890, produced its last loaves of bread on Saturday (25 August). Husband and wife team Paul and Jenny Sutton, who have been running the bakery for 42 years and are now retiring, said the bakery has relocated three times in a bid to keep the business going.
Paul told wokingpeople.co.uk: “It’s a sad day really, but we have got plans and we will always take a bit of Chobham wherever we go. People’s shopping habits have changed. A lot of people either internet shop or go to the supermarket and we just rely on the older people.
“I have tried to change things a bit to keep up with the times. We’ve been selling more filled rolls for builders and people that come in at lunchtime. That has been my mainstay for the last 20 years. It’s been about selling filled rolls. Selling loaves of bread has died out.”
In 2007, local residents campaigned to keep the Sutton’s business in operation as a bakery, as the shop was put up for sale for more than two years in the hope that another baker would take over.
