Plant baker Warburtons saw a dip in profits in 2006, according to its latest accounts filed at Companies House.
Pre-tax profits fell from £49.1 million to £43.4m in the year ending September 2006, despite a 16% sales increase to £209m.
Warburtons expanded its distribution capability in 2006 through the commissioning of two new bakeries, one in the north-east and another in south Wales and also commissioned a second bread plant at its Enfield bakery during that financial year. The baker now has national listings in all the big four multiples, after achieving its first national listing in Tesco towards the end of the financial year.
Since the year end, the second plant in Enfield has swung into action and Warburtons has brought forward plans to install a second bread plant at its Tuscany Park bakery in Wakefield to this year. That project, originally scheduled to start in 2008, is now due to be completed early in the new year.
