It was one of the defining political issues of 2012 - and saw Greggs mobilise the baking industry in defence of the proposed pasty tax.

However, it now seems there has been a change of heart at the BB75 bakery retailer and it is to start selling hot pies that are subject to VAT.

A report in The Grocer suggests the chain, which led demonstrations at No 10 with outgoing chief executive Ken McMeikan, will be serving hot pies, following feedback from its customers via Facebook.

Many customers had complained they were unhappy at purchasing lukewarm or cold versions of Greggs’ best-selling savouries.

A spokeswoman for the chain said: “Greggs already offers toasted sandwiches, but is looking at extending the range of food that could be served hot or heated up.

“If something is served hot it will attract VAT.”
