The organiser of the Munich-based IBA show has announced the postponement of the event for 2021.

The international trade fair for the bakery and confectionery industry was due to take place on 24-28 October but the next IBA has now been scheduled for 22-26 October 2023.

The organiser, GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen, said the decision for the postponement was due to uncertainty around Covid-19 travel restrictions. The busy international trade fair schedule for the coming year mean meant staging IBA in 2022 was “assessed as not advisable”, the company added.

“The goal is to be able to present IBA 2023 in its usual dimension with the same strength and quality,” said Dieter Dohr, chairman of the board of management at GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen. “We are aware of our responsibility as a leading trade fair and, with the decision, we are ensuring that the industry will be able to plan both at an early stage and in the long term.”

The IBA advisory board welcomed the decision to postpone the event while acknowledging that the decision had been a difficult one.

“We fully support this early, well-considered decision even though we very much regret that the industry will not be able to meet live at IBA 2021 as planned this year,” said Dr Detlev Kruger, chairman of the IBA advisory board.

The IBA was first held in 1949 and traditionally takes place every three years. It is considered by many in the industry to be the premier international bakery event and is a key platform for suppliers and equipment manufacturers.

Visitors typically include bakers, pastry chefs, restaurateurs, café owners, hotel professionals, caterers, and decision-makers from the food retail market.
