The British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) is preparing to relaunch its Lion Eggs Code of Practice at the end of this month, and has also lodged a trademark application for a logo for products such as quiche made with Lion eggs.
A spokesman told British Baker that it had undertaken a comprehensive review of its Code of Practice “to incorporate the latest scientific developments to ensure the Lion remains the most robust Code in the world”.
BEIC has also developed a “made with British Lion eggs” slogan and registered a logo, he confirmed. This was part of its ongoing “campaign to encourage retailers and brand owners to make more of the Lion on packaging for food products such as quiche”, he said.
British Baker’s sister title The Grocer reported that the egg industry trade body had registered the slogan - alongside a new logo depicting the lion symbol and Union flag within an egg - with the government’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO).
The BEIC is also lobbying for the introduction of mandatory country-of-origin labelling on egg products across the EU.
The Code of Practice for Lion Quality eggs covers breeding flocks and hatcheries; pullet rearing; laying birds, including both hygiene and animal welfare requirements; on-farm handling of eggs; distribution of eggs from farm; feed; hen disposal; packing centre procedures; advice to retailers, consumers and caterers; environmental policy and enforcement.
