Addo Food Group set to close Spalding bakery site

Spalding bakery is set to close next year

Addo Food Group has revealed plans to close its Spalding bakery in Lincolnshire next year.

The company said the proposed closure, which would impact 405 employees, is needed to keep Addo profitable, “maintain its market-leading position and meets customer expectations in an increasingly competitive marketplace”.

For more than 35 years, Spalding has produced sausage rolls and pasties, alongside snacking items including pizza pockets, mini burgers and mini pasties.

Should the site close in 2020 as proposed, production will transfer to Addo's Poole and Palethorpes bakeries.

Addo said supply would not be affected, and the company was liaising directly with its customers to discuss the changes in more detail.

“We fully understand the disappointment of this announcement for all of our employees, and we are committed to doing everything possible to support them over the coming weeks, especially those who would be directly affected,” said Addo CEO Deborah Bolton.

“In order to maintain our market-leading position and meet customer expectations as efficiently as possible, we need to optimise our manufacturing sites to enable a continued investment in quality, service and product and packaging innovation. This proposal will allow us to achieve this.”
