Reigning Craft Bakery Business of the Year Pettigrew Bakeries is set to open a fourth site in Cardiff in May.
Located in the heart of Rhiwbina Village in a former art supplies shop, the retail-only site will offer ‘the full Pettigrew experience’ including ‘exceptional sourdough baked the same morning, best-selling pastries, legendary sweet bakes, and customer favourites like the Chicken Mayo Parmesan baguettes’ as well as coffee from speciality roastery Clifton Coffee. There are also plans for a new range of hot lunch specials.
The exact opening date is yet to be confirmed but the Rhiwbina site will be open seven days a week from 7:30am-4:30pm Monday to Saturday and 8am-2pm (or until everything is sold out) on Sunday.
It adds to existing estate of three sites across the city – its first opposite Victoria Park opened nine years ago and specialises in patisserie and lamination, the Roath site focuses on bread production, and the city centre Castle Arcade site is retail only.
Sourdoughs are made with organic flour over a 72-hour process, while Pettigrew uses traditional yeasted methods to create products like demi-brioche, focaccia, honey-oat spelt bread and more. It’s also proud of its pastries including the Crème Brûlée Croissant and Mocha Cocoa Croissant.
Standout products, passionate staff, and the business’ ability to create different models for the various types of locations and customers have helped it to thrive and secure the title of Craft Bakery Business of the Year 2024 at the Baking Industry Awards.
David Le Masurier, founder and co-owner at Pettigrew Bakery said the opening “marks a significant moment” for the business, adding that expansion is the only way to tackle the headwinds facing the hospitality sector.
“For the past seven years, we’ve been a fixture at the Rhiwbina Farmers Market every Friday — come rain or shine — but now, thanks to the unwavering support of the local community, we’re making Rhiwbina our permanent home and joining a wonderful community of independent businesses that make this village so special.
“In the face of enormous headwinds for the indie hospitality and slow food sector, diversifying, innovating, and growing is the only way we can navigate these difficult times — and help safeguard the incredible jobs of our team. Our pricing reflects the true cost of quality ingredients, craft, and care — not margins for shareholders— and our community continues to show us that they understand and support that.”
Pettigrew Bakeries will keep its spot at the farmers market but added that the arrival of an all-electric delivery van will allow it to appear at more events and pop-ups across Cardiff in the future.

The whole team is absolutely thrilled, and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported the growth of our little family-owned business along the way. This award is testament to the hard work of our bakery teams, who are up early every day creating the Pettigrew products that people have come to know and love.”
