A world record attempt will take place this Friday at a Derbyshire bakery to celebrate this year’s National Doughnut Week.
Staff at Birds of Derby’s Albert Street outlet will aim to construct the largest doughnut stack on Friday (18 May), as part of this year’s National Doughnut Week on 12-19 May. It will help to raise funds for national charity The Children’s Trust, which provides specialist care and rehabilitation for children with multiple disabilities.
Mike Holling, retail sales director at Birds, said: “We were approached with the challenge last year to create the biggest doughnut tower, but we were just six inches off the record. This year we are looking to succeed and have even done a trial run with more than 500 doughnuts.
“We will be constructing the doughnut tower from 5am on Friday, which will be on display in our Long Eaton premises for 48 hours, and customers can then make a donation to such a worthy cause.”
Christopher Freeman of Dunn’s Bakery in Crouch End, North London, and organiser of the Week, said the business will be making thousands of doughnuts and has already sent products to 30 London radio presenters, including BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans.
Freeman said: “This year we have seen an increased number of bakers taking part in the Week, and it’s encouraging to see the exciting efforts these businesses have gone to in order to raise money for such a worthwhile charity.”
Janet Carr of Warings Bakery, which has six retail outlets in the Berkshire and Hampshire areas, said the firm had developed a unique range of doughnuts especially for the week. Varieties include dairy cream and lemon curd, pink shimmer summer fruits and caramel custard.
Carr said: “Doughnuts are a strong part of our morning offering at Warings, so raising the baked goods profile, increasing business and supporting a great cause as a result is important.”
The bakery firm has also planned a range of activities for its customers to fundraise for The Children’s Trust. These include competitions to guess how many doughnuts its bakeries will sell this week, and a challenge for customers not to lick their lips when eating a jam doughnut.
National Doughnut Week has raised more than £735,000 over the past 20 years for The Children’s Trust, and is aiming to raise at least £30,000 this year. For further information, visit www.nationaldoughnutweek.org.
