Greggs has opened its first supermarket Bitesize Greggs within the Tesco Southwark Superstore.

Open seven days a week, the location has created 10 new jobs for the local area and serves up a range of Greggs bestsellers including Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, sweet treats and hot drinks.

The opening marks the latest step in the rollout of Greggs smaller shop format, which allows the company to bring a tailored range of products to customers via compact units in high-footfall locations. The first Bitesize Greggs was opened at Sevenoaks Railway Station in November 2025, followed by one at Dartford Station and Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet in Ellesmere Port.

Described as ‘more agile’, the Greggs Bitesize locations support the firm’s broader estate growth with around 100–110 net new shops expected to be added to its portfolio in 2026. This feeds into its ambition to have at least 3,500 shops over the longer term, supported by investment in supply chain capacity required to enable that growth.

“Our Bitesize format allows us to bring Greggs to more customers from compact units in convenient, high-footfall locations, while still offering a selection of our best-selling products,” said Greggs property director Tony Rowson. “This new opening is an exciting next step as part of our broader ambition to make Greggs even more accessible to customers across the UK.”

The trial of an even smaller Greggs format was unveiled earlier this year in the form of a Greggs Express unit. The self-service solution was installed at a petrol forecourt, which is operated by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), just outside Glasgow Airport. The trial, which will assess customer behaviour and response to the self-service offer, will see a small number of self-service units rolled out across MFG travel hub locations over the coming months.

Greggs has also been rolling out innovation in its products line-up with a Steak & Stilton Bake added as part of its seasonal autumn menu.

Returning after a seven-year hiatus, the food-to-go retailer said the iconic flavour has flown off shelves since launch, delivering Greggs’ second biggest opening week for a bake ever, behind only its Festive Bake.

The opening week saw more than half a million Steak & Stilton Bakes sold, all covered by Greggs Stilton Insurance which allowed customers to swap their partly eaten bake for a classic Steak Bake if the blue cheese proved too much for their tastebuds.

“The debate around Stilton is clearly far from over, but we gave the nation a get-out clause and almost nobody used it,” said Zoe Harris, customer director at Greggs. “With hundreds of thousands of bakes sold in just one week and just 0.4% returned, it’s clear that plenty of customers were willing to take a chance on Stilton.”
