Pump Street Bakery has picked up the award of Best Food Producer at the BBC Food & Farming Awards 2012.
The Orford-based bakery accepted the accolade alongside Westcombe Dairy in Somerset at a special ceremony held at the BBC Good Food Show, which took place at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre on Wednesday (28 November).
Chris Brennan, joint owner of Pump Street Bakery, which opened around 18 months ago, told British Baker: “It’s a fantastic feeling to win; we are overjoyed and it’s a great honour to win this award. We focus on two things, real bread using simple ingredients that we bake and serve fresh every day, using local ingredients.
“We also believe we are very customer-focused at Pump Street Bakery. One thing we do is donate any leftover bread or bakery goods to a local hospice in Ipswich, so they get a good supply of fresh food. We want to play our part in helping the community.”
Pump Street Bakery, set up by Brennan and his daughter Joanna, consists of an artisan bakery in a converted barn, alongside a café outlet and a mobile bread shop, which delivers products to nearby neighbourhoods.
Finalists from the baking industry in the BBC Food & Farming Awards 2012 included The Pudding Stop in St Albans in the Best Takeaway category.
The Real Bread Campaign was also nominated for the Derek Cooper Award, named after the first presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme, recognising an individual or team bringing about a real change in our relationship with food.
