Sticky Toffee Slump Cake

A sticky toffee slump cake, a plant-based sausage roll, and a whole host of sweet and savoury snacks are among the gold winners at the Farm Shop & Deli Product Awards 2024.

The likes of Strawberry & Clotted Cream Biscuits, Crème Brulee Macarons, Yoghurt Topped Apple & Blackcurrant Filled Flapjacks, Seeded Sourdough Crackers, and Chilli & Cheese Oatcakes also achieved top honours this year.

Organised by British Baker parent company William Reed, in partnership with sister publication The Grocer, the annual competition was returning for a third successive year to showcase the best products from independent brands across the specialist food & drink sector.

“Following another record-breaking year for entries, we are thrilled to announce our list of winners for 2024,” commented Giorgio Rigali, head of communications, exhibitions at William Reed.

“NPD is critical to growth and these awards are unique, by way that producers get genuine informed feedback on their products and their business model which helps them refine their strategy. The list of winners truly highlights the quality and innovation that is available throughout the specialist retail sector, and we are delighted to be able to provide the opportunity for these businesses to have their products put in front of wholesalers, retailers and experts,” he added.

Extensive judging sessions were held from late January through to mid-February across three locations: Kitchen Food Company in Oxford, William Reed in Crawley, and Booths Central Office in Preston. Panels of industry specialists helped assess the overall business model of the products including value chain, branding and how well set they were for success in the independent sector, as well as their appearance and taste.

In a change to the format, the winner announcements came ahead of the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2024, which forms part of the UK Food & Drink Shows taking place at the Birmingham NEC from 29 April to 1 May. This was intended to enable all winners the chance to maximise opportunities that the show presents to promote their achievements. Selected Gold Award winners are also to be invited to join a live session to discuss their products.

There will be live bakery judging in Birmingham, however, in the form of Britain’s Best Loaf and the newly introduced Britain’s Best Cake. Entries are still open for both competitions, with a deadline of Monday 18 March for submissions.
