Quince Bakery was founded by Anna Higham

London-based Quince Bakery has kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to help it open a new café.

The bakery is hoping to raise £50,000 which will be used to open the café, called Clementine, in September across the street from its existing site on New North Road in Islington. Money raised from the crowdfunder will be used to help fit out the new space and cover the equipment needed.

Founded by pastry chef Anna Higham to celebrate British produce and baking traditions, Quince has become a cornerstone of the Islington community since opening in early 2024. Clementine is said to be the natural next chapter and will carry that same philosophy into a café setting.

The new dedicated breakfast, brunch, and lunch space will be open on Wednesdays to Sundays. The menu, which will be confirmed in August, will be rooted in British tradition with ever-changing seasonal items. Clementine will continue strong relationships with suppliers such as Flourish and Shrub, which provide produce. Comforting porridge, soup and toasties will be staples, alongside Quince’s tattie scones, pies, buns, and scones with lashings of jam and cream.

“The goal is to continue the community feel we have built at Quince Bakery with a similarly joyful and creative menu. We’ll be keeping the same focus on British traditions and working closely with the best suppliers, which is really at the heart of everything we do,” said Higham.

Rewards for contributing to the crowdfunder range from a scone with Ivy House cream and Quince jam at the café (£15) and a breakfast bundle of tattie scones, Cacklebean eggs and Red Bank coffee (£30), a ticket to the opening party (£50), bread for a year (£250), and even having the Quince and Clementine team catering a wedding (£10,000).

This is the second time Quince has turned to crowdfunding with its original campaign, launched in 2023 to support its opening, which raised over £40,000.

Fellow London bakery Sourdough Sophia has also found success with three crowdfunding campaigns which have supported its expansion. The latest development saw the business move into a 7,000 sq ft production space designed to help it fulfil its ambitions to have 20 sites across the capital.
