Inflation remained steady last month, staying at 2.7%, according to official figures.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) said that an increase in air fares boosted price growth, while downward pressure on inflation came from petrol and diesel prices.

According to the ONS, a basket of shopping that cost £100 in September 2012 would have cost £102.70 last month.

The latest numbers continue the trend of steady inflation, observed since spring last year.

The rate of Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation fell by 0.1% to 3.2% in September from 3.3% in August.
