Newly installed Magic blow-moulding machine at Werit UK’s site in Irlam, Greater Manchester

Plastic packaging manufacturer Werit UK has expanded its production site in the Salford suburb of Irlam and created nine new jobs.

An £8m investment, funded by its German parent company, has delivered around 32,000 sq ft of additional warehouse space and a two-storey 9,250 sq ft office complex to increase the site’s total footprint by 40%.

In addition, Werit has installed a Magic all-electric, multi-layer blow-moulding machine, new moulds for 5L and 10L canisters, and automated packing and palletising systems to boost capacity, improve efficiency, and reduce manual handling.

It has also extended its workforce from 50 to 59 staff members, with further recruitment planned. The company noted that it maintains strong links with Salford University and the Greater Manchester Growth Hub to support skills development and regional economic participation.

As part of its long-term sustainability plan, the firm is installing solar panels and EV charging points, introducing electric forklifts, and is aiming to become a paperless site by 2028.

Werit supplies packaging to clients across the food and beverage, chemical, and petrochemical sectors, including UK-based bakery ingredients suppliers such as KTC Edibles, Ragus Sugar, Taste Flavourings, and Muntons. Its parent company is headquartered in Altenkirchen near Bonn, and employs over 600 people at ten locations across Europe.

The new facilities were inaugurated by Sandra Morrison, the German Honorary Consul in Manchester, who was given a site tour by Werit UK managing director Sunny Prakash and Werit group managing partners Joerg Schneider, Ekkard Schneider, and Marian Weger. They were also joined by Salford Council business engagement manager Nick White and David Hilton, director of Midas Business Development – the inward investment agency for Greater Manchester.

“The expansion of our premises marks a pivotal moment for Werit,” commented Prakash. “Since establishing ourselves in Greater Manchester in 2003, we have grown by serving customers nationwide. Now, by increasing our capacity, modernising our infrastructure and advancing sustainability, we are better positioned than ever to deliver quality, reliability and innovation.

“This project is not just about buildings and machines but about creating long-term value for our customers, employees, and community, and strengthening our contribution to the economy of Salford and Greater Manchester,” he added.
