Konditor & Cook’s Curly Whirly Cake has gone viral after it appeared on Eurovision 2014.
The cake was presented to UK entrant Molly Smitten-Downes, who looked shocked at the gift from her local bakery in Borough Market, London.
The segment, viewed by 180m people, caused a stir on social media, with one user posting: “As a kinda official cake expert, the Curly Whirly cake is from @konditorandcook so cheer up #molly could’ve been an m&s tub #eurovision.”
After the show, Smitten-Downes tweeted: “Big thanks to @konditorandcook and @Eurovision for the cake and book. Needless to say my Nan’s piece hasn’t made it back to the UK!”
Gerhard Jenne, founder, replied: “@mollysd @Eurovision Why not come and bake a cake with me for your Nan (or bring her along too, she sounds energetic) Gerhard.”
Konditor & Cook’s Curly Whirly cake contains a rich dark chocolate sponge, layered with smooth vanilla bean frosting, and decorated with swirls of dark chocolate ganache. It features in Jenne’s new book, Deservedly Legendary Baking, released this month.
In a statement, Jenne added: “I couldn’t believe my eyes that one of my cakes had made it onto Eurovision. It started a Twitter frenzy with many Konditor & Cook fans recognising the cake while other viewers were bemused by Molly’s shocked reaction.”
