Halifax-based bakery Lottie Shaw’s won two awards at the Deliciouslyorkshire Awards 2013, held earlier this week at the National Railway Museum.
The bakery achieved the titles of Best Bakery and Supreme Product for its Seriously Good Yorkshire Parkin at the awards, which are organised by regional food group Deliciouslyorkshire.
Parkin is a soft cake made with oatmeal, black treacle and ginger, which is traditionally eaten on Bonfire Night. The company beat off competition from the Harrogate Food Company (Sticky Toffee Pudding), Burtree Puddings (Orange Marmalade Pudding) and Just Desserts (Curd Tart) in the bakery category.
Charlotte Shaw, owner, said: “I’m delighted. It’s great for us as a business and it’s nice to be recognised. We want to get the most out of it. We’ve been doing a lot of work recently on branding and we’ve just launched our online shop. The timing has been great.”
Shaw added that the bakery plans to bring out a parkin flapjack for the Tour de France next year, which will pass through Yorkshire.
Elsewhere, Bluebell Bakery won the bakery category in the York Food and Drink Festival Consumer Choice Award for its brownies. In the business category, The Spice Pear Hepworth was awarded best Yorkshire afternoon tea.
The awards were hosted by food award judge and BBC broadcaster Nigel Barden on 25 September. He said: “We’re always amazed by the hidden gems lurking on the dining tables and in the delis of Yorkshire. Tonight was our chance to honour these food heroes for their hard work and talent and get their name out there. They thoroughly deserve these tasty trophies.”
Cath Clelland, chair of directors at Deliciouslyorkshire, said: “Deliciouslyorkshire is now able to grant a licence to distributors to provide market access for Yorkshire producers and growers in return for using the Deliciouslyorkshire brand and all it conveys - quality of product, service, provenance, and all things great about Yorkshire.
“The products will be sold under the Deliciouslyorkshire label, but will actually be from our members. Our first licence is with Ibbotson’s and we’re excited to tell you that, within a month, you will see the Deliciouslyorkshire brand in use in various supermarkets across the region on a range of Yorkshire grown vegetables.”
