Shereen Ritche talks with Lunch group event director Chris Brazier at the Excel Centre in London last year

The CEO of London-based bakery Buns from Home is stepping down from the role after two years.

Shereen Ritchie, previously managing director at Leon, took up the post in early 2023 tasked with helping the business on its growth journey.

She will be passing the reins back to Buns from Home founder Barney Goff who started the business in his mother’s kitchen during the first Covid lockdown where he created the firm’s signature item – a croissant pastry cinnamon bun. The first store was then opened in Notting Hill in January 2021. Goff will now resume the CEO role and continue driving the company’s roll out plans.

It now has a core menu of sweet and savoury buns with flavours including choc hazelnut, pistachio, banana bread, cardamom, and ham & cheese. There are also rotating specials such as the festive mulled cider bun and pecan pie bun.

Under Ritchie’s leadership the business has become a ‘social media and mainstream bakery sensation’, expanding to 21 sites across London. In a LinkedIn post, Ritchie said the first thing she did upon joining the business was solidify the mission as ‘we bring joy’, followed by model restructures, cookbook deals, and expanding the retail estate.

Reflecting on her time with the brand, Ritchie said: “The last few years have been an incredible whirlwind of growth and achievement, and this remarkable brand is now well-positioned for global success. I’m deeply grateful to my amazing team for their dedication, creativity and passion in delivering the ‘buns magic’ to our ever-growing customer base. They are all superstars.

“Passing the reins back to Barney feels like a full-circle moment. We have a strong pipeline of openings for 2025 and I’m excited to watch buns from home thrive in its next chapter.”

Ritchie hasn’t given details of her next move but remains a shareholder in the business.

Speaking to British Baker before Christmas, Ritchie said Buns from Home was exploring expansion outside of London, with Manchester high on the list of possible locations.

“Strategically, what is right? I don’t know,” she said. “But what I do know is that Buns From Home will be a global brand. This will be something that will have longevity and will last a test of time. There is no doubt in my mind, and it will get to a point that it will scale very, very quickly.

“A huge amount of work in the last year and a half has gone into creating perceived value in the products and what flows down to the bottom line.”
