Tearoom business owner Cara Maiden has won three awards for her cake designs at the Cake International event at the Birmingham NEC.
Maiden was crowned winner in the wedding cake decoration and the novelty cake category awards for her black, five-tier wedding cake and a Roald Dahl design centred on James’ giant peach. She won silver for her Beatrix Potter creation.
Speaking to WalesOnline, Maiden said: “When my name was called, I simply couldn’t believe it. I think I’m still in shock.
“The cakes are incredibly detailed - it took me about 72 hours to make the wedding cake, working in the nights and during the day. It is the largest cake competition in the world, with over 1,300 entries. It’s the competition we aim for.”
Maiden gave up her career as a child psychiatric consultant eighteen months ago to follow her dream of opening up her own tearoom business – named the Polkadot Teapot.
Also competing at the event was Peboryon Bakery with its Wallace & Gromit inspired cake-o-matic cake.
