Discounter Lidl has completed its roll-out of in-store bakeries in all 600 nationwide outlets.

A number of new products have been introduced on a rotation basis “to keep the range fresh and exciting” for customers, according to the retailer. They include a fruit lattice, cheese & onion slices, and scones, as well as regional variants such as a Scottish oat loaf made from Scottish oats, which is exclusively available in Lidl’s stores in Scotland. A spokesperson said that Lidl’s savoury items tend to be the top sellers.

The move is the latest in Lidl’s plans to grow across the UK and create around 2,500 new jobs in the process, which include bakery managers for the new stores.

It announced plans to invest more than £220m earlier this year, with 20 more store openings to take its total to 620.

The discounter took a 3.6% market share in the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel in the 12 weeks to 17 August, while fellow low-priced supermarket Aldi took 4.8% as they continue to put pressure on the big four.

Edward Garner, director at Kantar Worldpanel, said: “Competitive pricing among the big grocers and deflation in the price of staple items such as vegetables, milk and bread has driven inflation down yet again.”
