Hairy Bikers to judge Manx bake-off

BBC’s Hairy Bikers will judge The Great Manx Bake-Off at the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival on 26 September, where cake makers will use Manx ingredients to raise money for the Eve Appeal Gynaecology Cancer Research Fund.

Sobo to Selfridges

Chocolate and cookie company Sobo launched a range of giant cookies in the bakery section of Selfridges’ London food hall last month. Four cookies retail for £5.

Training initiative

Scottish Government Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop met staff at bakery ingredients firm Macphie of Glenbervie in Stonehaven, who are studying for, or have achieved, management qualifications. Hyslop announced funding for an extra 600 management modern apprenticeships part of ScotAction, a package to help support Scotland’s economy.

US targets acrylamide

The US Food and Drug Administration is considering issuing guidelines for industry on reducing acrylamide levels in food products. It is asking manufacturers to tell them about any changes they have made to reduce the chemical formed mainly in baked and fried food and linked to cancer in some scientific studies.

Top worries identified

Fears about cash flow, credit risk and trade credit over the next 18 months are the biggest concerns among Europe’s leading retail and consumer brand businesses, according to research by insurance broker Marsh. Its survey found that 75% expressed a high level of concern about cash flow, while the supply chain was identified as the top future strategic and operational risk.
