White rye winner

Bread baked with white rye flour flour made from the inner, white part of the rye kernel leads to better insulin and blood sugar levels than wheat bread with rye bran, according to new research from the Lund University Faculty of Engineering. It found that white rye flour leads to much better values than both regular wheat flour and rye bran.

Baker on TV

BB columnist Tom Herbert, director of Cirencester-based Hobbs House Bakery, will front a bread-themed BBC4 programme later this month. Titled In Search of the Perfect Loaf, it will follow the 32-year-old baker’s quest to bake a loaf worthy of winning the National Organic Food Awards, and will air at 9pm on 25 March.

Yellow fund-raiser

Bakery students at University College Birmingham encouraged office workers to eat something yellow to raise money for children with liver disease. They got together with staff from the Birmingham-based national charity, Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, for Big Yellow Friday to make and sell cakes in city centre offices.

Safer Warburtons

Warburtons presented certificates to 42 drivers at its Enfield distribution centre who successfully completed their NVQ Level 2 and became Driver CPC-qualified until March 2019, after training from logistics training company Van Hee.
