Scottish Bakers has opened the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2022/23 for entries.

The trade body is calling on butchers, bakers, and pie makers from Scotland and further afield to enter the competition which seeks to find the best pies on offer in 11 categories. They are: Scotch Pie, Football Pies & Savouries, Macaroni Pie, Steak Pie, Sausage Roll, Cold Savoury, Hot Savoury, Vegetarian Savoury, Haggis Savoury, Bridie, and Apple Pies.

Awards will be given to the best products in each category while the winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared world champion.

The closing date for entries is 31 October 2022 with judging taking place at Carnegie Conference Centre in Dumferline on 16 November.

Alasdair Smith, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, said he was delighted to be launching the competition for 2022/23.

“We have a huge number of hard-working butchers, bakers and other pie makers who have shown their mettle in recent years and who I know will be itching to share their perfect pies with our judges. They will put each one through their paces before selecting the best in category and ultimately the best Scotch pie in the world,” he added.

The winner will be announced at an awards lunch on 24 January 2023 at the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld, by TV personality and long-term pie award presenter Carol Smillie.

“I am so delighted to be back on board with the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards. The world may have changed, but our love of pies most definitely has not. It’s such a fun day celebrating the skills of so many butchers, bakers and other pie makers who kept the nation’s spirits up with our best loved dish,” she said.
