Here, we take a closer look at some of the treats capturing the nation’s attention at this time of year:
Lebkuchen
Originating in Nuremberg, Germany, lebkuchen is a beloved gingerbread infused with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. The soft cookie is often decorated or dipped in chocolate.
Yorkshire pudding wraps
Searches for Yorkshire pudding wraps have soared by 447% over the past month. This twist on a British classic has captured the nation over the past few years, with the humble Yorkshire pudding venturing beyond the Sunday roast table to street food markets where it is stuffed with many of the classic roast trimmings and smothered in gravy for a rather messy, but delicious, on-the-go meal.
Chimney cakes
Originating in Hungary but widely popular in Prague, chimney cake is a cylindrical pastry coated in sugar and cinnamon, sometimes filled with Nutella or ice cream. It’s 17% rise in online searches is perhaps not as meteoric as others mentioned above, but that could be because its fans are searching for the treat via social media sites such as TikTok instead.
Churros
Hailing from Spain, churros have become a staple at foodie markets year round. Served warm and dusted with sugar or cinnamon, they’re often accompanied by a dipping sauce such as dark chocolate or dulche de leche.
Dutch pancakes
Not to be confused with Dutch baby pancakes (which are similar to Yorkshire puddings and baked rather than fried), these mini fluffy pancakes are also known as poffertjes. Made with yeast and buckwheat flour, they are served warm with powdered sugar and butter.
