Patisserie UK folds after losing Costa contract
Lees Foods’ Patisserie UK subsidiary has been placed into administration after attempts to sell it as a going concern proved unsuccessful. Patisserie UK, a bespoke manufacturer of coffee shop round cakes, loaf and tray cakes, desserts and biscuits, suffered due to the loss of a major customer - Costa Coffee - last year. When Lees Foods acquired the business in 2007, Costa represented 75% of Patisserie UK’s sales, but according to the company, within three weeks of the acquisition Costa announced it was to source a quarter of this business elsewhere.

Competition entry venue change
There has been a change of venue for the entries from the London and South East Region leg of the California Raisin Bread Competition 2009.Entries need to be taken to the National Association of Master Bakers’ head office in Ware, Hertfordshire – and not BAKO London as stated on the flyers sent out. Ready salted is no longer top crisp
Ready salted crisps are no longer the nation’s favourite flavour, as cheese & onion has now taken the top spot. The market for cheese & onion crisps is worth £256m, according to Mintel research, with sales having increased an impressive 15% in the last two years. Valued at £244m in 2006, ready salted crisps have slipped into second place, despite an increase in sales of 5% over the same two-year period.

Bagel giant sees profits drop
Canada Bread’s frozen bakery division has seen profits fall almost 50% despite an overall increase in sales for the year. Its frozen bakery division, made up of its North American and UK frozen bakery businesses, including Maple Leaf Bakery UK, which owns the New York Bakery Co brand, saw adjusted operating earnings fall 48.6% to $21.1m, from $41.1m in 2007. The company said these figures reflected the significant impact of higher commodity prices and production costs in 2008.
