Administrator called in to ailing bagel supplier
London-based manufacturer The Bagel Group has gone into administration, with around 80 jobs believed to be at risk. The company, previously known as Mr Bagels, produces bagels under the Mr Bagels brand and filed for administration on 16 January 2009. MCR Corporate Restructuring is administrator.

Tax payment delay scheme embraced by firms
HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) recently launched Business Payment Support Service (BPSS) has already enabled 25,000 businesses to delay paying more than £429m worth of tax, according to the government. The service, launched in November 2008, gives businesses the opportunity to pay all their HMRC taxes, including PAYE, National Insurance Contributions and VAT, through timetables they can afford. It was set up to help those in business or who are self-employed, and who are experiencing temporary financial problems.

Chocolate supplier Barry Callebaut expands in Mexico
Chocolate and cocoa product manufacturer Barry Callebaut has opened a new chocolate factory in Mexico, strengthening its position in the North American chocolate market. The factory, based in Monterrey, will enable an annual production of around 100,000 tonnes and will act as a gateway between the company’s Central and South American markets. It will be Callebaut’s third largest production facility worldwide and cost approximately USD40 million.

Premier Foods recieves offer for its French bakery business
Premier Foods has announced it has received a “firm offer” of Euro50m (£45.1m) for its Martine Spécialités business, the remaining part of its Speciality Baking Group in France. The offer comes from private equity backed, Financiere Martine SAS, a company controlled by Cerea Capital FCPR, for a cash-free and debt-free consideration of Euro50m. Cerea Capital is a Euro130m Private Equity Fund dedicated to buy-outs and transmissions in food and beverage related sectors.

Ian Dobbie takes MD job at Délifrance
Ian Dobbie has resigned from his position as managing director at British Bakels, after he was offered and has accepted the role of managing director at Délifrance UK. The management team at British Bakels said “the company is sorry to lose Ian, but recognises the opportunity presented by the new company and fully understands his decision to take it”.

Columnist Tony Phillips has passed away
British Baker columnist Tony Phillips passed away on Saturday 17 January, as the result of a brain tumour. He was a very popular columnist for British Baker for many years. He held the position of president of The National Association of Master Bakers (2004/05). He was also the first Englishman ever to be invited to become president of Retail Confectioners International, the confectionery association of North America.

Finsbury Foods sees group revenue up
Finsbury Food Group has seen group revenue rise by 12%, according to its latest trading update. However, it still predicts operating margins will be 1-2% lower than last year. Within its largest division, the bakery manufacturer has seen cake sales increase by 4% in absolute terms, but like-for-like growth has been “flat”. According to the statement released: “Growth in this part of the business has been impacted by a reduction in sales of seasonal products in our range.”
