Factory workers at Greencore Cakes & Desserts’ site in Hull have accepted a pay offer from management in a long-running dispute at the firm.
In January this year, workers at the site staged a 24-hour strike, following claims their pay had been cut. Unite the Union had claimed employees were “fighting to claw back pay after attacks on their terms and conditions, have seen them lose up to £40 per week”.
A ballot of 500 workers took place on Monday (4 March), after the threat of a 48-hour strike last week was suspended when management agreed to reinstate all premium rates and also to award a pay increase. The offer was overwhelmingly accepted, according to Unite.
Len McCluskey, general secretary, Unite said: “Our members at Greencore have sent a clear message to management that they won’t allow attacks on their terms and conditions and this is something that all employers should take note of.”
Pete Ford, site convenor, Unite, added: “I’m so proud of our members for the stand they took. Because Unite refused to accept these attacks, our membership at the site has grown by over 200, proving that workers want and need a union that gives strong leadership. We now hope we can move forward with a much more positive working relationship with management here in Hull.”
