Greggs opens first site on London Underground

Greggs has today (23 March) made its London Underground debut with a shop at Westminster station.

The chain is continuing to target store openings at sites such as train stations, retail parks, industrial estates and drive-through locations, and plans to open 130 further bakeries in 2018. It opened 90 last year.

“As ‘on-the-go’ eating habits change, we have built on our existing estate of shops to take Greggs where our customers want us to be,” said Roisin Currie, retail and people director at Greggs.

The Westminster store will open at around 6am and close at 11pm daily, serving steak bakes and coffee to thousands of commuters coming through the station each day.

In an interview with The Telegraph earlier this year, Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside said the firm would open in more Tube stations if the Westminster site proved successful, and he acknowledged that “opportunities will be limited because the space is limited”.

Twitter was aflame with comments from politicians and locals craving Greggs’ sausage rolls in reaction to the announcement. However, the firm’s latest Balanced Choice range – comprised of options for under 400 calories – now accounts for more than £100 million of the firm’s sales.
