Bettys has extended its opening hours by venturing into evening dining at two of its cafes.

Hosted at its iconic café tea rooms in Harrogate and York, the evening dining experience will be available from 6pm to 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2 May and will be available to both walk in customers and by reservation.

Diners will find some of Bettys signature dishes including Yorkshire Rarebit (Yorkshire ale and melted mature cheddar, served on rustic Cobble bread), the Yorkshire Smoked Salmon Plate, and Yorkshire Charcuterie for starters. The latter is among the new options which have been designed with social dining and sharing in mind, according to the business. Mains include chicken schnitzel, Bettys burger served in a caramelised onion roll, and a superfood salad.

The dessert menu, meanwhile, embraces several of the Bettys signature bakes, such as the Gooey Rascal Sundae. It’s made with Gooey Rascals – an indulgent take on its famous Fat Rascal but with a hidden molten chocolate caramel centre – served with vanilla ice cream, candied peel, Swiss chocolate sauce and whipped cream. There’s also a Brown Bread Sundae with Yorkshire brown bread ice cream with crushed macaroon, toffee sauce, and whipped cream.

Other sweet options include lemon torte, fruit tart, and a carrot Gugelhupf (a carrot sponge cake coated with water icing).

“We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming customers for evening dining,” said Nicky Sellers, Bettys director of branch operations.

“The unmistakable surroundings of our Harrogate and Yorkshire establishments, each in the heart of their respective locations, and the exceptional customer service that people know from Bettys make this a perfect opportunity for time with friends, a pre-theatre meal or simply a relaxed and elegant start to your night on the town. We really hope people will enjoy it.”

Bettys was established in 1919 by Frederick Belmont, a Swiss immigrant who wanted to bring continental café culture to England. It now operates five café tea rooms in Yorkshire.

Bakers and food-to-go operators are increasingly looking at extending their appeal across the dayparts. Evening trade remains the fastest growing daypart at Greggs and now accounts for 9% of sales at company-managed shops. Items such as pizza and chicken burgers, as well as deals for them, are helping to draw customers in later in the day.
