With Veganuary – a month long celebration of plant-based eating – well under way, British Baker rounds up the latest vegan product launches.

Veganism has boomed in the past year, with hundreds of product launches and even a vegan week on The Great British Bake Off.

Pret has unveiled its first vegan cookie, Crosstown has opened an exclusively vegan doughnut and coffee bar, and supermarkets have cleared shelf space to make way for a host of branded and own-label lines.

“The retailers, brands and restaurants that don’t embrace Veganuary will be missing out,” said Zoe West, corporate outreach manager at Veganuary.

Here’s a selection of bakery products launched this month:

Greggs vegan roll

After months of requests and rumours, including a petition by animal rights organisation PETA, Greggs launched its vegan sausage roll with 96 layers of puff pastry and a bespoke Quorn filling.

Higgidy Velvet & Vegan Creamy Mushroom and Kale Pie

Higgidy has added its first ever vegan pie to its portfolio of pastry products, which includes rolls, pies and tarts. The pie is made with vegan shortcrust pastry filled with Portobello, chestnut and porcini mushrooms with curly kale and pearl barely in a creamy sauce, and topped with millet and red quinoa.

Asda meat-free sausage rolls

Asda created this pack of four frozen meat-free sausage rolls designed for Veganuary snacking. The rolls contain a soya and wheat protein meat substitute, wrapped in traditional puff pastry.

Asda vegan cupcakes

This pair of Vegan Society-approved chocolate sponge cakes are made from strawberry jam and coconut milk, decorated with a dark chocolate frosting and topped with a white marshmallow.

Gato puds

Gato & Co relaunched two of its gluten-free pudding pots with vegan ingredients in time for Veganuary. They contain almond milk, courgette in place of butter and aquafaba in place of eggs. They are available in chocolate & coconut brownie and salted caramel sticky toffee pudding variants.

Speciality Breads’ Eden Burger Bun

Speciality Breads unveiled its new Eden Burger Bun, which includes a touch of potato to create a crumb under the crust. The product sits alongside a 60-strong range of breads from the manufacturer, which are registered by The Vegan Society.

Macphie cake and muffin mixes

Macphie launched a range of vegan-certified cake and muffin mixes on World Vegan Day (1 November). The mixes are available in plain and chocolate flavours and were certified after they went through an “intense audit process”.

Aryzta vegan pastries

Food manufacturer Aryzta Food Solutions added four savoury pastries to its vegan-friendly range. The additions included a Saag Aloo Slice, Spicy Chickpea Roll, Vegan Sausage Roll and a Spicy Chickpea & Kale Pithivier. The products are available frozen.
