Monument move

Monument Foods is due to open a factory in Sunderland in the next few weeks to expand its higher-end offering of bakery products. The north-east food wholesaler will transfer production of its cake, pastry and savoury goods to the new site from its current South Shields location.

Egg appeal to PM

The British Egg Industry Council has written to Prime Minister David Cameron, urging him to support legally produced UK eggs. MPs and the clergy are among thousands who have signed an online pledge at www.legaleggs.com to support the British egg industry and ban products from hens housed in illegal battery cages outside the UK.

Spar adds to wraps

James Hall & Co, the Spar wholesaler for the north of England, has added new limited-edition sandwiches and wraps for 2012. The distributor has tripled the number of unique varieties on offer to 12 throughout the year.

Fire investigation

A Warrington bakery suffered serious damage following a fire at its premises on Saturday (21 January). Fire crews tried to tackle the blaze at Tomlin’s Bakery on Amelia Street. No-one was on the premises at the time and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
