A new UK student internship programme has been lauched through a partnership between bakery supplier Dawn Foods UK & Ireland and the University College Birmingham (UCB).
It is designed to give bakery and patisserie students broad practical experience in a commercial bakery environment, including rotations within quality assurance, operations, and commercial teams, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the bakery supply chain and product development process.
The internship follows on from recent enhancements of UCB’s bakery degree course to include an optional year in the industry and also adds to Dawn’s Student Ambassador Programme, which has been running for the past eight years.
One of the first students to take up an internship is Alessia Ferreira Kilicaslan, who is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Bakery & Patisserie Technology at UCB. She will join Dawn for 48 weeks from mid-July – covering the third year of her four-year degree programme.
Kilicaslan will work alongside Dawn’s application chefs, supporting NPD with recipe creation, product trials, and testing. She will also assist with customer demonstrations and gain practical insight into how new products and concepts are brought to market.
Towards the end of her internship, Kilicaslan will complete a cross-functional project, drawing on the experience gained throughout her time at the bakery business.
“Dawn has worked closely with UCB over many years and so we are delighted to have developed this new internship opportunity to support the next generation of young bakers studying on UCB’s flagship bakery degree course,” commented Tim Clarkson, managing director of Dawn Foods UK & Ireland.
“Ensuring the young people have the opportunities to learn and thrive is essential for the future of the UK bakery sector and Dawn is committed to giving students the ‘real life’ skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in this exciting industry.”
