BAKE-OFF VS SCRATCH BAKING

Earlier this year Tesco announced it was to axe scratch baking in 58 stores and reduce it at more than 200 other sites in a shock move that put 1,800 jobs at risk. Meanwhile, Morrisons revealed that it was to ramp up the number of bakers and offer bakery apprenticeships for people who want to “make bread in a traditional way – from flour and water”.

This feature will look at the different routes taken by some of the UK’s biggest retailers as well as the benefits and challenges presented by each method with regards to cost, product range, customer service, the number of staff needed and so on.
