Mademoiselle Desserts has strengthened its cheesecake credentials with the acquisition of the English Cheesecake Company (ECC).
The sweet bakery manufacturer said the strategic purchase of the northwest London business, for an undisclosed amount, would help unlock exciting opportunities for innovation and growth. It added that ECC’s retail presence complements its strong position in the UK foodservice sector, and offered the perfect blend of expertise and creativity to satisfy more sweet tooths across the nation.
ECC was founded by fellow cheesecake obsessives Philip Weldon and Alan Laurier in 1995. Its first bakery was located in Notting Hill before moving north across London in 2015 to its current 20,000 sq ft site in The Oxgate Centre just off Edgware Road, close to the North Circular Road and start of the M1.
The company has grown to employ a 150-strong workforce supporting 24/7 production, as well as 30 in its management team. These workers are all to retain their positions following the acquisition.
ECC reported a 15% increase in turnover to £22.8m in its latest financial year to 31 March 2025, while EBITDA rose 12% to £2m. Its range of branded products include classic cold-set cheesecakes (in sharing or portioned slices formats), frozen bites, and vegan options, which are sold at retailers including Tesco, Waitrose, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-op, Aldi, Lidl, Costco, Booths, and Ocado. It also has wholesale customers such as Pizza Express, Prezzo, Azzuri, Pizza Hut, and Zizzi, as well as regional and national distributors like Booker and Holdsworth.
Most recently, ECC unveiled new Rhubarb & Custard Cheesecake Bites (a favourite of senior development chef Adam Cutting) and a Sweet & Salty Cheesecake featuring vanilla cheesecake plus a layer chocolate fudge, topped with caramelised popcorn and salty pretzel pieces.
“We are delighted to become part of such a high-quality desserts business in Mademoiselle Desserts and are confident that with our know how and their capabilities we can significantly move the business forward,” commented ECC managing director Josh Laurier.
B-Corp accredited Mademoiselle Desserts was itself acquired by Swiss-based Emmi Group just over a year ago, and operates 12 bakeries across France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK, including in Maidenhead, Corby, and Taunton. It supplies sweet treats such as cakes, tarts, pastries, muffins, and cookies to in-store bakeries and foodservice clients, as well as producing a range iof mini beignets under its sub-brand Moi by Mademoiselle Desserts.
“We are really excited to finally welcome English Cheesecake Company into the group and know that together we can build on the excellent foundations and create growth through innovation, excitement and customer engagement,” said Nigel Taylor, UK group managing director for Mademoiselle Desserts.
