‘Gluten-free’ brand Genius is facing the backlash as consumers say their piece following the recall of 25 products made at its Bathgate bakery.
Some of its own branded, Livwell and supermarket own-label products in all five major multiples have been recalled since the weekend following gluten contamination. Routine testing found gluten content in the affected products to be between 5ppm and 80ppm - to be certified as gluten free products must contain less than 20ppm by law.
Genius has said the contamination is very low and should pose very low risk to consumers.
A statement said: “Our routine product testing procedures identified this low level contamination, and whilst this poses a very low risk to customers, Genius responded immediately with a full product recall.
"As always, the safety of our customers is our first priority. We sincerely apologise to all those that have been affected and are reviewing our procedures to ensure this does not happen again.”
However, its Facebook page has been inundated by unhappy consumers, many of whom proclaim distrust in the brand as well as several reports of serious illness, resulting, in at least one case, in time off work.
