The European Commission’s Sugar Management Committee has agreed to the import of 127,000 tonnes of raw sugar, after a vote yesterday (28 February).
It will be imported at a minimum duty of €141 (£121.70) per tonne. The Committee also voted and agreed on the import of 95,293 tonnes of white sugar at a minimum duty of €161 per tonne.
A proposal to release 150,000 tonnes of “out of quota” sugar onto the EU market, has also been voted into favour, at a minimum duty of €172 per tonne.
On 24 January the Committee agreed the import of 54 000 tonnes of raw sugar, as well as a first release 150,000 tonnes of “out of quota” sugar onto the EU market, which means that up to now some 584,000 tonnes have been put on the market.
The Commission had previously said it intended to allow 1.2 tonnes of additional sugar on the market.
Two more tenders are foreseen this year, on 15 May and 12 June, according to the European Commission.
