Cornish firm Crantock Bakery has spoken of plans for a second factory following a near six-fold increase in production.
This follows the introduction of a new flow wrapping machine from KernPack, which can wrap products at speeds of up to 80 units a minute.
The Newquay based bakery told British Baker’s sister publication Food Manufacturer that it was nearly time to open a second site.
Helen Chudleigh, head of packaging told the publication: “The KernPack machine is helping us win new contracts due to its capacity and the ease at which it can wrap new products.
“Production has increased from 70,000 units a week to in excess of 400,000 – without the machine we just couldn’t do it.
“Our customers offer an increasingly wide range of individual bakery items to consumers and change their menus regularly, but the KernPack machine has been meeting demands perfectly.
“Looking to the future, the machine has allowed the business to grow to a point where it’s almost time to open a second site in Cornwall.”
In the past six months the bakery said production had reached a ‘record high’, and it now has contracts with sectors such as travel and major retailers.
The growing range now consists of 40 wrapped products, from pastries to cakes.
According to its last set of annual figures, Crantock Bakery grew sales from £9.8m to £10.5m in the 52 weeks to 30 September 2013.
