Small “wholesome” cakes business Bar Cake has bought space for future expansion at its Kingswood, Bristol, bakery and is looking for more distributors for its frozen products.

Co-founder Georgina Doyle said that, although Bar Cake still has excess capacity, it has acquired the building next to its present bakery and is going to knock them through.

Bar Cake, which has three employees and a turnover of about £60,000, hand makes flapjacks, traybakes including brownies, 25cm round cakes, cup cakes and cheesecakes. Caterers often serve the cakes with sauces as desserts, said Doyle.

The company was formed by Doyle and her brother Tom Batle two and a half years ago, after Doyle had supplied cakes to her brother’s Bristol café Revival for about 18 months.

Bar Cake supplies about 20 outlets in Bristol and caterers in the south east and Wales through its recently-appointed distributor W4 Foods.

It has had customer inquiries from further afield and is looking for further distributors, said Doyle. It has also supplied cakes to the organiser of London Fashion Week.

Doyle said Bar Cake’s dairy- and gluten-free products were particularly popular, as was its decision not to use preservatives.
