Some of the 342 workers whose jobs are at risk at Burtons biscuit factory in the Wirral will take their case for the plant to be retained to the company today (Friday).
Workers from the Moreton plant, accompanied by representatives from the Unite union and local MP, Angela Eagle, will meet Ben Clarke, chief executive of Burtons, and other board members to present them with an alternative, costed plan for keeping the plant open.
Ritchie James, Unite’s regional officer, said: “It is absolutely tragic that these workers find themselves in this position. This plant, making popular products, has a loyal and committed workforce whose alternative plan to closure should be considered as a serious proposal.”
He added: “This plant can go from strength to strength...closure must not be an option.”
Burton’s blamed an increasingly challenging and competitive environment with industry over-capacity and high commodity cost inflation for its decision, which it said formed part of a new £25m three-year capital spending programme to build production capabilities at its manufacturing sites in Edinburgh and Llantarnam, South Wales.
