Are you a baker training at college or with a company? Are you a keen apprentice? Are you a company with good trainees who deserve recognition? Or perhaps you are a bakery trainer with some outstanding students, whom you feel should be noticed.

If so, then we want to hear from you for the Trainee Baker of the Year, sponsored jointly by the National Skills Academy and Improve.

This newly launched award aims to recognise those trainee bakers who will go on to be the backbone of the industry. It is open to all types of hands-on trainee bakers, whether they are making bread, savouries or confectionery. Entrants could be training in craft or industrial skills with a company or a college, but they must be able to demonstrate their commitment and passion for a career in the industry.

Judges will be interested to hear about entrants’ skills, enthusiasm and ambition. What are they studying and what have they achieved so far? What do they hope to do with their qualifications in the future?

"Improve and the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink are delighted to sponsor this award, which recognises the considerable personal commitment of individuals to equip themselves with the skills to make a positive contribution to the future of bakery in the UK," says Improve CEO Jack Matthews. "Well-qualified and skilled bakers are critical to the future of the industry and those who can demonstrate that additional passion and dedication should be fully recognised."

Entries would be welcome from individual trainee bakers at any level, as well as bakery trainers and tutors, who want to put forward those students they feel have shown themselves to be capable, conscientious and keen to learn.
