The National Bakery School (NBS) in London has merged with South Bank College (SBC) in a move designed to spark creativity and drive advancements in bakery education and the wider industry.

The merger is described as ‘a natural and strategic progression’, as both institutions are integral parts of the London South Bank University (LSBU) Group. The unification leverages the units’ shared values, resources, and long-standing collaboration to create an ‘even more robust’ educational offering which will better serve students, faculty, and the wider baking industry.

Students can now access to more opportunities to enhance their knowledge and bakery experience. SBC, recognised for its hands-on training and artisan baking courses, will integrate with the theoretical and research-based programmes offered by NBS to create a comprehensive learning experience where students can master the craft of baking and the science behind it, LSBU added.

The new National Bakery School within the LSBU Group will deliver baking education from L2 Patisserie Certificate to L6 BSc in Baking Science and Technology, with the possibility of continuing to masters and doctorates.

“The merger will also facilitate greater collaboration between students and members of staff, promoting the exchange of ideas and expertise,” explained Cristiana Solinas, head of the National Bakery School. “This will likely accelerate breakthroughs in areas such as ingredient innovation, sustainability in baking, and the development of healthier baked goods.

“Students will be encouraged to participate in initiatives that not only enhance their learning but also contribute to solving real-world challenges in the bakery sector. This focus on research and innovation will position the new institution as a thought leader in the global baking industry,” Solinas added.
