Half of Britain’s bakers have said Halloween helps them scare up a decent rise in turnover.
Forty-nine per cent of bakers see a ‘significant’ increase in sales over the spooky season, according to a survey by the Craft Bakers Association (CBA).
While the uplift is less than that seen at either Christmas or Easter for most bakers, one in 10 say their Halloween sales are equal to Christmas and one in 10 sell more over Halloween than at Easter.
With 80% of bakers planning to offer Halloween-themed products, the survey found that cupcakes are the most popular (67%), followed by biscuits (43%) and cookies (33%).
Halloween treats go on sale as early as September in 25% of bakers’ shops, with the remainder displaying Halloween baked goods throughout October.
“It’s great to see bakers making the most of opportunities like Halloween,” said CBA operations director Karen Dear.
“Craft bakers are able to create high-quality, unique products for seasonal events that their customers know are made locally and have proven provenance.
“As the Halloween occasion continues to grow in popularity for the whole of the retail space, I am confident that our members will also continue to maximise the opportunity this brings.”
Zombie doughnuts, ombre cake and pumpkin spice brownies are among the products being offered to UK shoppers this Halloween, as revealed in British Baker’s round-up of seasonal NPD.
