Grand Cru, Café du Monde’s espresso coffee, has been recognised with a Gold star in the Great Taste Awards 2013.
Grand Cru is the best-selling espresso blend in Café du Monde’s portfolio. Available in cases of 6 x 1kg, it is a balanced blend of 100% Arabica coffees comprising Kenya AA beans for acidity, Brazilian Minas Gerais Plateau for body and high-grown Arabicas from Honduras.
The judges said: “The acidity and sweetness in this blend worked well together and judges liked the pleasant sourness it delivers. There is mild smokiness to this espresso and a very mild bitterness, though fruit characteristics do come through.
“There is a savoury, almost meaty flavour. A nicely crafted, well-balanced espresso.”
Delighted with the award, managing director of Café du Monde, David Latchem, said: “We are pleased that the judges have recognised what our customers have been telling us for some time – this is an excellent espresso blend that performs well as an espresso and yet retains a ‘bite’ in a latte or cappuccino.
“It reflects great credit on our blending and roasting team.”
Overall, more than 12 judges taste and comment on each product presented. This year’s awards attracted a record number of entries. In total 9,738 food and drink products were blind-tasted, tested and discussed during two months.
Of the 9,738 products entered, only 33.8% were awarded a star.
