Greggs is set to open its most premium UK site ever in collaboration with department store Fenwick, which will see diners enjoy sausage roll and Champagne pairings.

The brand-new Greggs Champagne bar, found in Fenwick’s food hall in central Newscastle, will open on Thursday 24 October and run until 31 December. The experience will be open between 11:30am until store closing on a reservation-only basis for customers.

The indulgent menu, specially created by Fenwick executive head chef Mark Reid in collaboration with Greggs, will see the bakery giant’s classic savoury menu served with a delicious range of contemporary and ‘in vogue’ condiments as well as cocktails and Champagne.

It follows in the footsteps of Bistro Greggs – the first collaboration between the two Northeast firms – which saw customers enjoy a fine dining experience based on Greggs’ menu items.

With over 1,700 Steak Bakes sold at Bistro Greggs last December, this year’s menu sees it served with a creamy peppercorn aioli. The famous Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt is taken to new heights with the pairing of Bloody Mary ketchup, and the iconic Sausage Roll has been revamped with the pairing of a hot honey chilli sauce.

For the first time, Champagne enthusiasts can pair bakes and rolls with a selection of handpicked Champagnes served by the glass or bottle, including Bollinger Rosé and Laurent Perrier with the prestigious Louis Roederer Cristal available at £75 per glass, or £425 by the bottle.

On the sweet side, Greggs is serving up a host of signature cocktails inspired by Greggs’ sweet treats. Diners can enjoy a Yum Yum Twist – a sugar-glazed cocktail made with rum and real Yum Yums – a Cream Éclair which features vanilla vodka and dark chocolate liqueur, and a non-alcoholic Peach Melba mocktail. The Pink Jammie Fizz, originally served at Bistro Greggs is also returning.

The design of the Greggs Champagne Bar at Fenwick pays homage to the Belle Epoque era (a period in French history characterised by beauty and joy). The space has been designed to feel decadent, mirroring Art Nouveau stylised details throughout.

It will seat 16 customers around a curved bar where guests can also ring vintage, crystal bells for a top-up of their tipple.

“Whilst Champagne and Greggs might not be the most immediate food and drink pairing, following the success and reaction to our Greggs Bistro last year, we’re excited for the launch of the Greggs Champagne Bar at Fenwick,” said Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs.

“Hopefully everyone who visited us last year, and many more, will enjoy the fun and unique experience that’s been created and discover that a chilled glass of Champagne accompanied by a Sausage Roll will be the hottest ticket in Toon for 2024.”

Leo Fenwick, strategic partnerships director at Fenwick said the retailer was proud to once again partner with “fellow North East icon, Greggs” on the project. “This pop-up enhances our growing restaurant offer which continues to evolve through unexpected collaborations and new concepts bringing customers a truly memorable in-store dining experience,” Fenwick added.
