Suffolk-based Two Magpies Bakery has served its 2000th click-and-collect customer.
The customer, Sean Chap, was served at its Aldeburgh branch this week and awarded a box of baked treats and Prosecco.
The business established its click-and-collect service four weeks ago from its Norwich, Darsham, Aldeburgh and Southwold sites, as well as Wenhaston Village and Saxmundham.
It is offering a range of baked goods, including sourdough, croissants and cinnamon swirls, as well as essentials such as meat, vegetables and dairy.
“Since the start of April, we’ve had to close all four branches and furlough 105 of our staff,” said Steve Magnall, co-owner of Two Magpies Bakery.
“With demand for our fresh bread still very high due to shortages in the major supermarkets, we decided to start our click-and-collect service to give customers easy access to all those everyday essentials that were impossible to buy.”
The bakery is also offering free home deliveries to those who are in need or self-isolating and unable to leave the house.
Consumers need to order 48 hours in advance and collect items from shops.
“We’re finding now that 40% of our sales come from non-bakery items, proving just how differently people are shopping right now,” said Magnall. “Many don’t want to go to their supermarket, so we’re offering something that allows them to social-distance easily, have access to great-quality produce, and still feel very safe.”
Magnall said he hoped that when the current climate returned to normal, more consumers would continue to support the bakery and remember the small businesses who had made a difference.
