British Bakels is back in full production following a fire in its powder plant.

Firefighters were called out to the bakery on Granville Way on Friday evening (10 July), after flames broke out from a cake mixing machine.

The company said the plant was safely evacuated and no staff were injured - with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue swiftly bringing the outbreak under control.

James Millward, chief operating officer, said: “I would like to pass on my personal thanks to both my colleagues who were on site at the time and Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue service, who worked together swiftly and calmly to prevent any permanent damage to our operations.  It is because of their endeavours that there will be no disruption to the high level of service which our customers rightly expect from us.”

Station manager Julian Green from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service who attended the call-out, said: “The initial speed and weight of attack from the attending crews kept the fire contained to the cake machine and extinguished it quickly, preventing a major fire involving the whole factory.

“There were no injuries to staff or firefighters and I would like to praise the quick actions of crews and assistance provided by site staff.”
