An unusual fruit from a native African tree, the baobab, is now available for use in bakery products such as cereal bars, muffins and cakes.
Baobab, which is contained in a hard nut, has six times more vitamin C than oranges and twice as much calcium as milk. The Organic Herb Trading Company has been appointed UK distributor for both the conventional and organic fruit pulp powder.
The off-white, powdery fruit pulp looks like sherbet and can be blended with anything. It has a tangy taste described as ’caramel pear with subtle tones of grapefruit’ and can instantly boost the nutritional value of many products. It also acts as a flavour enhancer, which means less sugar can be used in products.
Conventional baobab pulp powder costs £19 per kg and £21.50 for the organic version.
