Artisan miller Bacheldre Watermill is in supply talks with several plant bakers that are looking to develop speciality breads, highlighting provenance and local links.

The Powys-based company has been approached by various large bakery players in the last six months, after it invested £500,000 in new milling and bagging equipment last year.

"We now have the capacity to supply the bigger bakers and we are interested in working with them on new flour blends," said Bacheldre MD Matt Scott. "Big companies are increasingly interested in working with us, using our brand to highlight provenance, tradition and heritage."

Bacheldre is also working more closely with existing customers Waitrose and Ocado, developing new flours for launch later this year. New promotions with the retailers include a 25% discount on 1.5kg bags of spelt flour, which helped boost sales by 134% in a week, said Scott.
