A model gingerbread townhouse made with more than 18kg sugar, 22kg butter, 50kg flour, 4kg of ground spices and 3.5kg of golden syrup has been on display this weekend.
Maid of Gingerbread founder and head baker Emily Garland was commissioned by The Ideal Home Show Christmas to create the gingerbread townhouse.
The structure took more than 400 hours to bake, and two days to build by a team of six on site at London’s Olympia, using over 350 hand-baked gingerbread components and 30kg of royal icing.
Garland and her team clad the exterior with gingerbread brick tiles, 116 panels of sugar glass to create the edible windows, hand-made door furniture and intricate window boxes with lollipop flowers.
The exterior was hand-decorated with more than 134 bourbon biscuits, 175 chocolate fingers, 254 sugar petals and 262 gilded Maltesers which were all hand piped with royal icing and edible silver finishes.
“This is one of my favourite commissions to date. I’ve wanted to work on something of this scale for a long while and it’s been a dream to construct it on site on such a huge, beautiful building,” said Garland.
“I loved the idea of creating a large version of a town house rather than a classic gingerbread house, as it’s allowed me to incorporate my signature design style and create something a little bit different but of course still really Christmassy!”
